It is amazing how easy it is for a church to turn in on itself and to star in its own show. The temptation to wow everybody by taking a leap from your own temple dome is, I suspect, common to many congregations. To help us with this matter, we voted a mission statement that commits us: To know Christ and to make Him known.
This puts the focus in the right place. It makes Him the great center of attraction in our church; Christ crucified; Christ risen; Christ ascended into the heavens; Christ coming again. Concentrating on these grand themes, we've no need to sweat the small stuff. We know Jesus as Savior and Lord.
Our mission statement also motivates us to direct all our powers to make Him known. While we do not claim that we can solve the enormous problems in our city, we can try to help people as Jesus did. We can call them to His side in an unforced, natural way. At a depth we want to know Christ and to make Him known.
